Women’s Case Study 2: Opiate Detox of a Pregnant Mother*

Angelina is 31 years old. Soon to be married, and just found out she is expecting a child. She is happy about her pregnancy, and very worried that her current drug use is going to negatively affect the child. She has been taking Xanax (Alprazolam) for a number of years and Oxycontin (Oxycodone) for a couple months. The Xanax has been prescribed by a physician who hasn’t seen her for over a year and the Oxycontin has been from the street. Angelina contacted Executive Home Detox because she didn’t want to leave the comfort of her home to detox from the Xanax and Oxycontin.

Angelina agreed to see a physician who is a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. The physician was very thorough and recommended detox from the Xanax and Buprenorphine or Methadone maintenance to address the Oxycontin dependence. Angelina was adamant about getting off both the Xanax and Oxycontin. A Xanax withdrawal was orchestrated by using a longer acting benzodiazepine. An Opioid detox was orchestrated by transferring the Oxycontin use to low dose Subutex (Buprenorpine). The withdrawal was monitored day and night, around the clock, by the Executive Home Detox nurse, vital signs were taken, gastro-intestinal activity was monitored, and Angelina was stabilized with a plan for continued withdrawal.

Angelina started to attend an Intensive Outpatient Program and continued to see her physician. The Executive Home Detox nurse continued to have daily contact with her and provided consultation regarding her continued plan of withdrawal. Angelina was able to detox from the Xanax and Oxycontin in three weeks time. She continues to attend an outpatient program and her pregnancy is progressing.

Angelina, who was taking Xanax and Oxycontin in her early pregnancy, is now drug free. She had a successful, full-term pregnancy, and now has a very happy, healthy baby. The nurse from Executive Home Detox continues to talk with her by phone.
